Fela Kuti was a gifted saxophonist and bandleader, and an indisputable musical genius whose incendiary fusion of African rhythms with jazz improvisation and funk percussion gave birth to an entire musical genre. Zombie is a hypnotically grooved ’70s record by the Nigerian Afro-beat superstar whom James Brown called ‘The African James Brown’.

Perhaps if the Clash had done a Bowie and gone all European after their love/hate relationship with the USA, they would have sounded something like this. Great tunes and a live sounding production guarantee this album will never date.
Les Negresses Vertes - Mlah (France 1989): DL
Dark but warm, funky but filmic. Full of the unfulfilled promise of a life cut tragically short only weeks after this, his only solo album, was completed, when Suba died in a fire at his own studio. In it’s sleeve notes Suba describes Sao Paulo as The Bladerunner of the Tropics. On the CD he provides the soundtrack to this insight. He takes the bombastic polyrhythms of carnival and turns them in on themselves to create subtle creeping jazz and rock tinged grooves.
Suba - Sao Paulo Confessions (Brazil 1999): DL1 | DL2
Manou Chao is OK, but Macaco understandably gets somewhat irritated to be called ‘the new Manu Chao’. when in fact his presence in Barcelona was what prompted Manu Chao to move there in the first place. Macaco’s the better songwriter—less of a one trick pony—and this album is full of interesting twists and turns. Perhaps not an absolute classic as it fizzles out towards the end, but great summer music with a twist.
Macaco - Rumbo Submarino (Spain 2001): DL
A brass band or a rock band? Both really. As they don’t have a commanding lead vocalist, they tend to travel the world looking for other singers and musicians to splice their musical DNA with. The results are usually greater than the sum of the parts. And in this case transcendental. The kind of music that could give fusion a good name.
Think of One - Chuva Em Po (Belgium/Morocco 2004): DL
An extraordinary singer-songwriter that sings in French, Spanish and English with equal aplomb. The songs have simple and spacious ‘less is more’ arrangements using piano, trumpet, and unusual percussion including what sounds like foot tapping and thigh slapping on track 3! There’s melancholy, the joyous heat of Mexican folk music and a dash of Bjork (but not as mannered) eccentricity. The overall effect of listening to the whole album is the aural equivalent of floating down a river from one exotic land to the next
Lhasa - The Living Road (Canada/Mexico/France 2003): DL
His debut and also best work: quirky, modern (especially being recorded four decades ago), ironic and full of the strangest dissonant sounds (from band-saws to car horns), with these eccentric idiosyncratic vocals bringing it all into focus. Once you’ve acclimated to Ze’s weird universe you’ll learn to love him. Even better news, the sixty-something pioneer is still recording music and sounds as unique as he does here.
Tom Ze - Tom Ze (Brazil 1968): DL
A Malian singer, but essentially a European album, this is a mix of traditional Malian forms with sophisticated jazz and sample-based arrangements. They play in the Tishoumaren (”music of the unemployed”) style, and sing mostly in the French and Tamashek languages. It you didn’t know its provenance you might think it was music from Mars. Guaranteed to be unlike anything you have heard before.
Tinariwen - The Radio Tisdas Sessions (Mali 2000): DL
Joao Gilberto is perhaps forever destined to be lesser known to casual jazz fans than his occasional collaborator Stan Getz and his ex-wife Astrud Gilberto. However, true fans of Brazilian music recognize that Gilberto is second only to Antonio Carlos Jobim as a writer and interpreter of traditional Brazilian music and Brazilian-influenced jazz. Traditional-style sambas, sung in Portuguese to acoustic guitars and hypnotic percussion make this beautifully essential.
Joao Gilberto - Amoroso/Brasil (Brazil 1977): DL
That Ry Cooder, you’ve got to keep an eye on him every minute, or he jumps into another cross-cultural collaboration. Somehow, he always finds just the right space to slide his sinuous slide guitar into, so that it works in almost any context. Here, amidst the multi-layered percussion, piano and Cuban guitar rhythms, Cooder’s slide simultaneously finds a home and eggs the ensemble on. The natural beauty of the Cuban tonal and rhythmic palette is the real star of Buena Vista Social Club, evoking both a sense of mystery and a feeling of intense emotional satisfaction.
Buena Vista Social Club - Buena Vista Social Club (Cuba 1997): DL
